District Fire Warden Assistant
Duchesne County

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands will be filling one
district fire warden assistant position, no benefits.  This is a seasonal position.  This job is located in Duchesne County.  Successful candidate will be required to live within the County and be available for calls within 30 minutes.   Job is available approximately May 1, 2008 through November 30, 2008.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
: Fighting wildland fires on state, federal and private lands; fire prevention and presuppression activities for Duchesne  County.  May assist with training and equipping of volunteer fire departments and other organizations that respond to fires; assists in development of fire mitigation planning and project work; conducts hazard analysis of wildland subdivisions, residences and proposed developments; administers burning permit after inspections; completes fire reports, work plans, time sheets and vehicle mileage log  records; performs other related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS:   Must be at least 18 years old and be in very good physical condition. Must be able to complete the aerobic Pack Test consisting of a 3 mile WALK, carrying a 45 pound pack in 45 minutes or less as well as be able to lift and carry 50 pounds. Prior experience is preferred.    Graduation from High School or GED equivalent; possession of a valid driver’s license; experience with chain saw operation preferred but not necessary; ability to drive a standard transmission 4 x 4 vehicle; applicants must be willing to travel extensively and endure primitive camping conditions at times.  Hours and days worked will vary due to fire suppression duties. There may be the need to travel out of the area or out of State on fire assignments.  Candidates will use chainsaws, chipper, and other hand tools to remove and dispose of debris.  Training will include: chainsaw use, chipper use, pruning techniques, and hazard fuel identifications.

 This position will be compensated for on call status at a rate of one paid hour for every twelve hours on call during the fire season when the policy guidelines are met. This position is eligible for overtime and hazard pay on fires.

 EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:   Receives fire reports from the public and determines location, land status/ownership, and information concerning the fire.  Processes the information and dispatches ground resources based on decisions made by the floor supervisor to meet tactical requirements.  Operates fire radio system, telecommunications, computer fire programs, multi-line phones, and must be able to deal with the public in a courteous manner.  Works with field units and other dispatchers in order to support the fire.  Maintains daily, weekly, and monthly records.  Inputs data into databases for weather, fire tracking information, and supply orders.  During off-fire occurrence periods may be assigned special projects as needed.  May be assigned the responsibility of monitoring the operation of the dispatch office for short periods of time or the opening and closing the office.  Supervised by Center Manager.

The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands has up to (4) four seasonal positions available (no benefits) in various statewide locations.  Positions may be located in, Richfield, Moab, or Salt Lake City, Utah.  Positions will begin in mid May or early June and will last for approximately three to four months.  No housing is available.  Rate of pay will be commensurate with experience and education.  

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Under the supervision of the Area Manager or Area Forester provides technical forestry assistance to private forest landowners as part of the Division’s Forest Stewardship, Forest Health and Forest Legacy Programs.  Duties may include, but are not limited to, aerial photo interpretation, ` delineation, establishment of forest inventory plots, stand examination, marking timber sales and sale boundaries, stand data entry, insect and disease surveys, inspection of agro-forestry practices, and monitoring of forest water quality and logging practices; may work closely with other natural resource agencies, private landowners and the general public.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge: Basic forestry principles; tools, and methods used in measuring tree attributes and gathering forest stand exam data; forest insects and diseases.

Skills: Computer applications, inter-personal skills.

Ability: Identify Utah’s major forest tree species; work effectively with co-workers, landowners, and partners; communicate effectively orally and in writing; operate a 4 x 4 vehicle (standard or automatic transmission) on one-track logging roads in mountainous terrain.  Must have a valid drivers license.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Arduous hiking in hilly to steep, mountainous terrain for extended periods of time. Stand densities and under‑story vegetation will vary.  Work will involve considerable travel with outdoor assignments under varying weather conditions.  Camping may be required on some project assignments.  Employees will be required to provide appropriate field attire such as field pants, boots, jacket, and rain gear.  The work schedule will be 40 hours/week, but actual tours of duty may vary to accommodate project needs (i.e. 4 -10 hour days, or 10 days on and 4 days off).

Preference will be given to applicants who are certified cruisers and have field experience and have completed forestry summer camp, OR graduates from an accredited two or four year college or university with major study in forest management, forest ecology, forest watershed management or related field.

Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources is seeking to fill eight (8) Wildlife Technician I positions. These are   eight-month positions without benefits available in Moab, Utah, from the middle of March through approximately November of 2008.  Consideration for alternate begin/end dates will be given if applicant is actively pursuing a degree.

 EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:  Project technicians will assist with various field projects involving native and endangered species of fish on the Green, Colorado, and San Juan rivers. Primary duties include monitoring of native and nonnative fish populations, using fish collection techniques such as seining, electrofishing, and trammel-netting, and various other related tasks. Following field trips, successful applicants will responsible for ensuring the field crew cleans and maintains equipment, and prepares for future trips. Applicants MUST be agreeable to mechanical removal and disposition of nonnative fish species using various approaches. Project technicians will also be responsible for data collection, organization, and input necessary to complete specific projects being conducted by the Moab Field Station.

 QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule under harsh and adverse field conditions and travel/camp while conducting fieldwork. Applicants must be willing and capable of performing job that includes physically taxing tasks and working outdoors in hot and/or rainy/cold weather. Field trips range from one day trips to ten day trips in remote locations.  Applicants are required to be over 18 years of age, possess an ability to work well with others, and have a degree in biological sciences, ecology, zoology, wildlife or fisheries management, or a closely related field. The incumbents will work alone and with teams of other seasonal Wildlife Technicians at Lake Powell, and will routinely coordinate with Law Enforcement (Conservation & Parks officers) and other biologists within UDWR and other agencies. Working periods consist of 5 consecutive days in the field with weekends off.  A typical workweek consists of 40 to 50 hours.  Field transportation and a grocery allowance are provided.

JOB REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS:  Basic plant identification skills are required. Botany survey technicians must be able to work well with others and alone.  They must be willing to work long days at remote locations, car camp for weeklong periods and hike in rugged terrain.  Technicians will work with GPS receivers; record survey/inventory results, habitat data, etc. in field notebooks; and other related duties as assigned.

These 35 Wildlife Technician I positions may be filled with multiple seasonal employees per position to aid the biologists to which they will be assigned to conduct UDWR’s Emergency Quagga Mussel Education and Implementation Plan. They will perform within an assigned region in order to keep Dreissena mussels from becoming established in Utah, while containing other existing Aquatic Invasive Species to locations where they have become established within Utah. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: The primary focus of the Quagga Mussel Education and Implementation Plan involves outreach and interdiction efforts to identify suspect boats and other water related recreational equipment contaminated with aquatic invasive species (“Aquatic Hitchhikers”), including decontamination of that equipment. Also, the incumbents will aid the biologists to conduct biological sampling to determine the presence of aquatic invasive species. The incumbents will work alone and with teams of other seasonal Wildlife Technicians (4-8 per region) assigned to the project in each region, and will routinely coordination with Law Enforcement (UDWR Conservation Officers & Utah State Parks & Recreation officers) and other biologists within UDWR and other agencies.

Incumbents do not manage budgets.

JOB REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS: Applicant need not possess a Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries science or management, aquatic ecology, wildlife science or management, or related fields, such biology. High School graduates and retired persons are encouraged to assess this position. Applicants should demonstrate an ability and personal drive to remain current and proficient in relevant technologies and trends related to fisheries and wildlife management. Applicants should demonstrate a well-rounded, basic knowledge for wildlife and wildlife-oriented outdoor recreation, particularly hunting, fishing and watchable wildlife issues, including an understanding of contemporary natural resource management issues and methodology, particularly aquatic nuisance species issues. Applicant should be somewhat skilled in writing and effective communication, especially oral communication with the public and the team for which they will cooperate.

If a degree is not held, applicants may be given preference if they demonstrate enrollment in an accredited college or university, pursuing an aforementioned degree. Preference may also be given to applicants with the aforementioned degree and/or professional employment experience in a natural resource management agency. Also, applicants with graduate degrees in the aforementioned disciplines and/or GPAs greater than 3.5 on a 4.0 scale will be given preference.

The incumbent is expected to perform other duties as assigned, including participation in training to maintain professional capabilities.
